Male Chastity and Travelling

History of Chastity and an erotic joke or a cruel medieval device

About the belts of loyalty, which the medieval knights, leaving their home, trusted to be faithful to their wives, perhaps they know everything. In any case, this is the traditional version. But lately, historians have expressed alternative versions of this seemingly strange accessory today.

It is tough to believe that in America several centuries ago such a primitive object could be used, crippling and unhygienic. But, on the other hand, it was a completely different time, and people were different. Many will say that there is ample evidence of the existence of chastity belts in Western culture. But, it turns out; literature and scientific research are based on the same primary sources. And most of them, describing the chastity of a woman, are for some reason allegorical or satirical.

The earliest surviving pattern of the chastity belt is made in the book in 1405. This is a manuscript of military technology: catapults, armour, torture devices, and other weapons of war.

Since the 16th century, the chastity belt has increasingly begun to appear in illustrations and engravings. A typical plot looked like this: an old and ugly husband was leaving for a trip. A naked wife, dressed only in a metal chastity belt, gives him the key. And somewhere in the background is a handsome lover, with the second key in his hand. He is just waiting for the departure of her spouse.

How can we explain the emergence of such a plot? “Man’s fear,” say the historians. In the Middle Ages, people changed as often as they do today, and the lover hero always loomed on the horizon. In other words, even in the 1500s, no one took the idea of ”iron pants” seriously. It was an ineffective anti-sexual device. But it was considered a symbol of male jealousy and female deceit, over which they giggled as they did today.

In museums, there are a lot of chastity belts. But most scientists believe that these metal objects are made later than in the Middle Ages, which are all the time referenced. They were made during the Renaissance, as well as in the Victorian era, to show “these wild medieval barbarians.”

It is unlikely that any woman could walk for a long time in a heavy metal “frame” that came into contact with the genitals and made it impossible to cope with natural needs. Especially causes grin design holes in the form of stars, hearts, or saws with curved teeth.

But the myth of the chastity belt firmly settled in the minds of people. And by short allegorical tales, whole generations believed that the medieval knights tormented their wives, putting on them “iron pants”.

Venetian lattice, Bergamo castle: If you think that these are the names of architectural decorations, then you are mistaken. But you probably know another “name” of the device, which left an indelible mark on the history of humanity – the chastity belt and here is the male chastity guide for you.

Stories of knights going on the Crusade and putting on chastity belts on their wives or lovers, most likely, are fiction. Firstly, there is no any reliable evidence of the use of chastity belts in the early Middle Ages. Secondly, the knights in such campaigns usually died (300 thousand knights took part in one of the campaigns, of which 260 thousand died from the plague and other diseases, 20 thousand fell in battle, and only 20 thousand returned home). And most importantly – the chastity belt could not be worn for more than a few days: rubbing iron against the skin and labia, and even with constant pollution in this place, would have caused blood poisoning.

The first mentions of chastity belts in songs and poems are dated to the XII century. But these references are most likely poetic metaphors. The first serious mention of chastity belts dates back to the 15th century.

Now it is impossible to establish when precisely and by whom the chastity belt was invented According to one version, some kind of it already existed in the ancient US: to avoid pregnancy, slaves were obliged to wear a construction of interwoven leather belts. According to another version, the chastity belt appeared only in the early Middle Ages.

According to another version, the custom of locking a woman to the castle appeared in the USA among the aristocracy: each time, going on a military campaign, her husband forced the blacksmith to put on his wife an iron belt, which he shot after his return.

The history of the chastity belt

Soon throughout America, chastity belts became fashionable. The models differed from the ancient American “keepers” except the material from which they were made: iron, silver and gold were added to the belts from belts. In the days of the Renaissance, the expression “lock up your wife or mistress in the American fashion” was widely used. Belt of Chastity became the official means of protecting female chastity. So, to a young man who asks for the hand of a girl, her mother proudly declared that she was wearing a “Venetian lattice” already from 12 years old. The bridegroom received the key from the device on the wedding day from the hands of the parents and became its sole owner. And the wedding took place in the house of the bride.

Often the “chastity belt” was the first gift that the young husband offered to his wife the morning after the wedding. The wife was obliged to wear this “best protection for the virtues of respectable women” always and everywhere. Only her husband could take it off when he wanted “to share a bed with his wife.

In Victorian England for the first time invented the male chastity belt. It was used to prevent boys from masturbating. Then in England, it was believed that masturbation leads to blindness, insanity, sudden death, etc.
